A tour for those who hanker to see, discuss and spend time in truly imaginative and beautifully constructed homes and gardens.
You’ll visit private gardens in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, Carmel by the Sea, Sonoma, Napa, St Helena and San Francisco. In Los Angeles you’ll meet landscape architects David Godshall co-founder of the environmentally and socially attuned ‘Terremoto’ Landscapes and Director Jenny Jones.
In Santa Barbara we immerse ourselves in gardens by Arcadia Studio and take a deep breath to prepare for the theatre of Lotusland, Ganna Walska’s garden, in the fashionable Montecito.
We make our way towards Carmel by the Sea where we’ll spend three days staying in one of the most beautiful locations in California. We spend time with Australian born, founding designer of Ground Studio, Bernard Trainor and we will be rubbing our hands marvelling at Planting Director, David LeRoy’s planting effects. Other Ground Studio designers will join us at various gardens. Our visit to Carmel is enhanced by a walk at the Point Lobos National Park and; a walking tour of points of interest in Carmel including the Butterfly house by Frank Lloyd Wright and other notable architects, artists and poets.
“I felt we had a very rare opportunity both to observe what is very special in terms of other people’s work, but also, to travel as a group and share this experience. You gathered like-minded individuals and arranged access to gardens from the sublime to the 99% breath taking”
Kate Seddon, Director, KSLD, participant of 2024 tour
From the surreal coastal landscapes of Carmel, we settle in San Franciso for two days to explore private gardens and innovative public parks by PWP, Field Operations and to the personal garden of world renowned photographer Marion Brenner. Marion’s garden is an example of where love and lifetime unite.
We continue towards Calistoga via the Portola Valley where the landscape changes to vineyards surrounded by magnificent Sequoia forests. In conjunction with Dexter Landscapes we visit exceptional gardens by Surface Design, Blasen Landscapes, Ron Lutsko, Andrea Cochran, Mike Lucas, Claudia Schmidt, Arterra and Thomas Church –one of the founders of the ‘Californian modernist’ style which has been so influential to garden designers across the world.
Our tour finishes in San Francisco.
