One of the most arresting voices on the international landscape-architecture scene, Claire Martin is not afraid to ask difficult questions of both the profession and of the culture more widely. She has identified, ‘accelerating technologies, shifting behaviours, climate volatility, biodiversity loss, and widening social inequality and isolation’ as some of the defining issues of our age. But she also notes that, ‘chaos . . . can also bring clarity: sudden events — environmental, cultural, or technological — reveal new needs and desires that can challenge our assumptions and expand our imagination. They remind us that people are increasingly looking for embodied and collective experiences over virtual, and individual.’
Claire is an associate Director at OCULUS, known for her systems approach across a range of scales, from insect hotels to public spaces, through to state-wide greening strategies. With a career spanning nearly two decades, Claire has curated projects across Australia and is a past president of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.
