Driven by the question of, ‘how one orchestrates the dynamism of nature in a garden setting’, Andy Hamilton places plants at the centre of his design practice. ‘We work with a light touch regarding built form within the landscape,’ he explains. ‘Regardless of the geographical context or the scale of our gardens, we put planting centre-stage, creating immersive green spaces that are dynamic throughout the seasons and evolving throughout the years. Hard landscaping has the biggest financial and ecological cost — so being disciplined in how we use built elements in our gardens is crucial.’
Having trained in Auckland, Andy moved to the UK in 2005 and spent ten years as an associate in Tom Stuart-Smith’s landscape design company. In 2015 he moved back to New Zealand and set up his own practice, with a portfolio that includes a mix of urban and rural projects, spanning the temperate-subtropical climate in the far north to the alpine regions of the deep south. International projects include an eco-resort in Zanzibar, private gardens on Mustique Island and Bali, as well as numerous projects in India.
