Tom Griffiths

Tom Griffiths is a writer and historian whose work has won prizes in literature, history, science, politics and journalism, including the Prime Minister’s Prize for Australian History, the Eureka Science Book Prize and the Douglas Stewart and Nettie Palmer Prizes for Non-Fiction. His books include Forests of Ash: An Environmental History, Hunters and Collectors: The Antiquarian Imagination in Australia, The Art of Time Travel: Historians and their Craft, and Slicing the Silence: Voyaging to Antarctica. In 2009 Tom was awarded the Alfred Deakin Prize for an essay about the Black Saturday firestorm – the prize-money helped fund a multi-media historical project with the people of Steels Creek in the Yarra Valley, resulting in his book Living with Fire (co-authored with Christine Hansen). His latest book, published in 2026, is Alice’s dreaming, a multi-layered work of history about a white girl and the Indigenous world she encountered.
